For the last two days of our stay in Kenya, we planned to check out one of the game parks on our way to the airport in Nairobi. We headed to Maasai Mara. We both agreed we couldn't go to Kenya, and not see some animals in their natural habitat. The drive to the park alone, was an adventure. Roads were so rough we often drove next to the road because it was smoother ground. We passed Maasai people in the desert-like landscape. As we drove past, they would wave to us. Many of them live in mud and cow dung houses, and protect their cattle and goats from lions in circular stick pens.

Of course seeing the animals in the Maasai Mara Park was a highlight, but even more incredible was staying in a remote community which made us feel welcome. People taught us how they live, what they eat, and toured us around their community with well-deserved pride. I kept a journal while I was there and wrote down a few things that I knew I'd really miss. Some are things I found funny, others I found beautiful. This is the list:

1. How kind everyone is.

2. Chai - milky (very fresh milk), sugary tea.

3. So many chickens and cows everywhere.

4. How great a community it is.

5. Footpaths and fences you crawl through.

6. How conservative everyone is in saving

Alex and I bathed using only one 12 litre bucket of water.

7. The stars visible in the darkest night sky.
